Unicorn Poop Cookies

Unicorn Poop Cookies

Welcome to my first attempt at recipe blogging! Most of you know me as a crochet pattern designer and yarn dyer, but I was a baker long before I fell in love with the fiber arts. I hope this recipe is the first of many to come!

Unicorn poop cookies are big, colorful cookies with a name that will bring a smile to anyone’s face. They’re always a crowd pleaser, and in 2018 they were county fair champions!

I first saw photos of unicorn poop on Pinterest, but could never find a recipe. Not being one to back down from a challenge, I decided to create a recipe for myself. After a few failed attempts using various sugar cookie recipes, I finally found a fit with the sour cream sugar cookie. It’s dense, cake-y, and and gives the perfect puff for poo.

BE WARNED, however, that this is not the sweetest of cookies. Traditionally sour cream cookies are meant to be frosted. Unfortunately, that would ruin the whole “poop” facade, so I added the sprinkles around the edge to enhance the sweetness by a tiny fraction. Despite not being overly sweet, these cookies still have fantastic flavor and I find myself grabbing for “just one more” each time I make them.

If you feel the need for frosting, I would suggest making the cookies a tad smaller than directed and turning them into sandwich cookies with a little buttercream in the middle. It would be a unicorn poop whoopie… or poopie pie, if you’ll pardon the pun.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup butter, softened

  • 2 cups granulated sugar

  • 2 eggs

  • 1 tsp vanilla

  • 5 cups flour

  • 1 tsp salt

  • 1 tsp baking soda

  • 1 cup sour cream

  • food coloring

  • 2 containers of sprinkles

Directions:

  • In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar.

  • Mix in eggs and vanilla.

  • In a medium bowl, combine flour, salt and baking soda.

  • Alternate adding dry ingredients and sour cream to the wet ingredients until well combined.

  • Separate the dough into 5 even portions.

  • Use food coloring to color each portion.

  • Seal each color in a separate Ziploc bag or wrap in plastic wrap.

  • Refrigerate for at least 6 hours - overnight is best.

  • Remove 1/4 of each color and keep the remainder in the refrigerator until the next batch.

    • This dough can get extremely sticky, so I like to work fast and keep it cold for as long as possible.

  • Make a quarter sized ball out of each color.

  • Roll the small balls into one big ball!

  • Use your mad Play-Doh skills to turn the ball into a snake.

  • Now roll your snake into a “poop” shape.

  • Empty the two containers of sprinkles into a shallow dish.

  • Dip the sides of the cookie into the sprinkles and place onto a cookie sheet.

  • Bake at 325°F for 15-20 minutes.

    • These cookies can be a little tricky to determine done-ness. They will appear more dull in color and should not be shiny when they are fully baked. You can test them by tapping the center of one cookie gently with your finger. If it feels a little spongy, you’re good to go. If it still feels doughy, keep baking.

  • This recipe yields around 2.5 dozen cookies.

  • Let them cool completely and don’t eat them all at once ♥
